Our Data Policy (and FAQs)

Grafiti is a data storytelling app. Play with trusted data from pop culture to politics. Share visual insights on social media and have a smarter conversation in seconds.

1. What is Grafiti?

Grafiti is a data storytelling app. We empower everyone to quickly explore trusted data and share visual insights on social media. Have a smarter conversation in seconds.

2. Why did we create Grafiti?

We created Grafiti to make it easier for everyone to communicate with trusted information - whether you’re advocating for your organizations or trying to win a bet. We believe there’s a lot of awesome insights hidden in the world’s data, and people deserve an easier way to contextualize it. With the rise of fake news, public trust and discourse is at an all-time low, but better information has the potential to improve our society. It’s one of the many reasons why we’re passionate about the democratization of data.

3. Where are you getting your data from?

Grafiti does not collect or create any data on its own. All data is pulled directly from the sources named and from their latest data releases. Though we make every effort to validate the data we use, we aren’t responsible for it. Please see the source link for any dataset to learn more specifically about that source, dataset and the organization’s methodologies. Please respect their rights and don’t circumvent them.
We use a variety of sources, including:

  • Data.gov, which includes the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Economic Analysis, Environmental Protection Agency, Congressional Budget Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, etc.
  • USAFacts.org
  • Pew Research Center
  • World Bank
  • Google Trends / Google News Lab
  • SPLC
  • NYC Open Data
  • data.world
And many other reputable primary sources of data.
Again, please see the source link for any dataset to learn more specifically about that source and dataset.

4. How do you verify your sources?

We use well-known sources and repositories of data and data analysis, from organizations with well established data policies and methodologies. Please see the source link for any dataset to learn more specifically about that source and more context.

5. How often do you add new data?

We’re still in beta and adding new datasets daily! Please check back daily for new topics and the latest trending data.

6. I can’t find the data I’m looking for. What should I do?

Email us at [email protected] - we’re actively looking for suggestions and contributions, so if you think there’s a topic, data source or dataset you’d like to see to represented, please let us know!

7. What’s your data methodology?

We try to be as transparent as possible in processing datasets, and adhere to the 2017 AP Stylebook chapter for data journalism. We use clean data from trusted sources. As a result, not a lot of data wrangling is usually required to correct "messy" data. We make our manipulations known and also make it known if null or missing values are present in the dataset. We don't want to be an opaque middle layer between the data source and the end user; rather we want to transparently provide easier access to data to act as a bridge between the data source and end user. If you have any questions about our data methodologies, please email us at [email protected]

8. How can I partner with Grafiti?

Please contact [email protected] to inquire about potential partnerships. We are continually looking for awesome data across community issues, culture, business, politics, sports, health and wellness - in short, anything your organization is passionate about!

9. Can I upload my own data?

As of now, only our trusted partners can upload data. To protect the veracity of the data in our app, it is crucial that only trusted sources are used with verified datasets. We do plan to open up our system and allow users to upload their own datasets in a thoughtful way, and even connect personal data from consumer apps.

10. How do you prevent misuse of the data?

By building this walled garden of data we ensure its trustworthiness for the larger community. In an effort to create a more data literate world through design, we control the interactions and ensure no manipulations or inaccuracies can be introduced. For example, the datasets provided through Grafiti cannot be directly downloaded and re-uploaded to Grafiti by a user, preventing malicious manipulation. We’d love to hear your feedback on better ways we prevent misinformation with data! Tell us at [email protected]

11. How do you report a bug?

As we continue to develop our beta, we would love to hear feedback from our users, the good, the bad, the ugly, the funny. Please reach out to us at [email protected] and feel free to include any screenshots as well.

12. What personal information do you collect?

We could potentially collect information about you from a variety of sources, including information that you yourself provide to us, that we receive from a third party such as when you create an account through Facebook or Google, that is publicly available, and basic non-identifying details such as your browser type and which pages you visit.
